The kids pile out of buses and pour into the park in groups barely contained by their chaperones. Excitement is palpable as they progress from station to station. MOHEE is an annual free field trip for grades 4-7th intended to extend learning and take it outdoors. Employing an open house style, students can explore and engage in a wide variety of outdoor skills. One of the goals of the event is to inspire the enjoyment of lifelong outdoor activities, while increasing their understanding, appreciation and sense of stewardship for natural resources, Wisconsinʼs outdoor heritage and related activities.

Reliably competitive, these middle-schoolers are racing to pick up “ducks” used to train dogs as retrievers.

During MOHEE students connect with educators, trained safety instructors and other volunteer mentors who provide an enriching and engaging experience in an effort to connect students to Wisconsin’s natural resources, outdoor heritage and lifelong skills.

“Our MOHEE event offers an opportunity for students from Milwaukee and the surrounding areas to learn about a wide variety of outdoor recreation – archery, fishing, wildlife identification, etc. while meeting folks who work in those fields. The youth get to practice putting out ‘wildfires’, birding, tree stand safety, turkey calling, and so much more! Overall, we had 27 activity stations this year. It’s truly a unique experience that is not able to be replicated in a classroom.” ~ Angela Vickio, Natural Resources Property Supervisor at Havenwoods SF.

MOHEE is organized through the Outdoor Heritage Education Center (OHEC), a non-profit organization that has been connecting individuals to the outdoors and natural resources since 1998. The OHEC mission is “to increase the public’s understanding, appreciation and sense of stewardship for natural resources, professional resource management and America’s outdoor heritage, including related activities like fishing, hunting and other shooting sports. We connect youth and adults to the outdoors and natural resources.”
