Photo essay: Kite Fest lights up Veterans Park

The 32nd Annual Family Kite Festival was held for two days over the weekend at Veterans Park on Milwaukee’s Lakefront. The event was sponsored by Gift of Wings and the Kite Society of Wisconsin and Illinois. While I’ve been aware of the event over the years, I don’t recall actually attending it before. I expected a whole lot of people flying kites, but I had no idea how elaborate–and impressive–it was. Here is a selection of photos I managed to catch while I was there on Sunday.

The enormous whale was among the headliners
Aerial acrobatics by The Blues Brothers, one of the kite demonstration teams
Crowd pleasers
Many do-it-yourselfers were out in the wide reaches of the park
Face painting was an option for kite flyers (and anyone else)
High flyers
The Windjammers Kite Team taking off
A headlining act, the Windjammers Kite Team in action
Selfie with kites (and elephant)
There was an occasional sacrifice!

While the kites were clearly the main event, other activities were also popular, such as rock climbing and the new swan boats in the park lagoon.

Rock climbing for all ages!
The new swan boats were very popular
Geese and swan boats coexisting
Lift off!
The Windjammers’ aerial acrobatics
