Newell and Ann Meyer Nature Preserve in Eagle

 

This 652-acre preserve is owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy of Wisconsin. It encompasses oak savanna and woodlands, wetlands and former agricultural land near Eagle, Wisconsin. Sandhill cranes call from the wetlands in spring, turkey vultures silently circle over the edge of the oak woods, and red foxes pounce on unsuspecting prey hidden beneath the snow in winter.

 

A major portion of the headwaters of the Mukwonago River, the most pristine small river system in southeast Wisconsin, rises from springs on the property. The river is home to 59 species of fish, including five that are threatened or endangered, and 14 species of mussels.

 

The preserve is adjacent to the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest, not far from Old World Wisconsin, and about three miles northwest of Lulu Lake State Natural Area.

 

There is a small gravel parking lot off of Hwy 67. A long dirt road leads into the property and a trail loops around the far end of it through woodland and prairie and beside wetlands.

 

The preserve is open year-round, dawn to dusk. There are no amenities.
