Mukwonago Park in Mukwonago
Located within the Mukwonago River watershed, which is among the cleanest and most biologically diverse in southeastern Wisconsin, Mukwonago Park is comprised of 355 acres of remnant oak savanna and woodland, dry-mesic prairie, and spring-fed wetlands. A high glacial ridge that stretches nearly the entire length of the park is covered with pre-settlement vegetation including several hundred-year-old oaks and carpets of shooting stars in spring. Over 4 miles of hiking trails wind throughout the park, traversing colorful prairies and shaded oak forest.
Mukwonago Park’s diverse habitat types make it a hotspot for viewing unique wildlife in southeastern Wisconsin. Listed as a birding hotspot by the Cornell Land of Ornithology (eBird) you can readily observe species such as yellow-throated vireo, eastern bluebird, and belted kingfisher. Watch for wildlife and share your sightings on iNaturalist.org “Wild in Waukesha” or by emailing the Waukesha County Parks Conservation Biologist at parks@waukeshacounty.gov.
