Lizard Mound State Park in West Bend

This 32-acre state park, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of the most well-preserved Native American effigy mound sites in the nation. About a mile of level limestone, grass and dirt trails wind past and around 28 conical and linear effigy mounds. The property’s effigy mounds have been interpreted as representing spiritual and/or animal-like forms, including bird, panther or water spirit, and the eponymous lizard mound.

 

Lizard Mound State Park is an Indigenous burial ground. The landscape is held sacred by members of descendent communities and others. During your visit please show respect for the site and the individuals who were interred here.Walking on the mounds is prohibited.

 

There is an interpretive center featuring cultural and historical information regarding the archeological aspects of the property. There is also a shelter and picnic tables. No other amenities.

 

This is a seasonal park. The gate is open from May 1 to Nov. 1. Visitors can still enter the park by foot in the off-season, but the entry roads and parking lots will not be maintained for winter use.

 

There is no entry fee and a vehicle admission sticker is not required for this state park.
