Hopkins Hollow in Milwaukee

This 18-acre parcel along Lincoln Creek on Milwaukee’s north side is owned by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District for flood management purposes. However, it is an unofficial park dubbed Hopkins Hollow by Nearby Nature MKE, a nonprofit dedicated to introducing nature to underserved communities in Milwaukee.
There is a short trail leading into the property from the trailhead at the intersection of Hopkins and Congress. A pair of “peace poles” crafted by a local artist identifies the trailhead. It is easy to continue walking beyond the trail terminus to explore the rest of the property. Nearby Nature MKE has been rehabilitating the land and restoring native vegetation, including yellow prairie coneflower, wild bergamot (bee balm), prairie clover and Jerusalem artichoke. A Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission Rare Plant Specialist surveyed a large section of the hollow and identified close to 100 plant varieties.
