Hawthorn Hollow Nature Sanctuary and Arboretum in Kenosha

A panoramic view of a restored wetland
This 90-acre private preserve and nature center has a variety of terrains and habitats that straddle the South Branch of the Pike River. Nearly five miles of trails wind through woodlands, a 12-acre Arboretum, a variety of gardens, and three historic buildings surrounded by prairie.
Hawthorn Hollow lies on a gently rolling moraine formed by the melting of the Laurentide Ice Sheet over 10,000 years ago. This glacial melting also formed the Pike River Watershed where Hawthorn Hollow is located. The South Branch of the Pike River divides the property in two—the west and the east side—and gives the property some steep topography with the river valley, uplands, and lowlands. This landscape provides many habitat types such as upland forest, floodplain forest, prairie, wetland, and river. This can lead to greater biodiversity because it can support many types of plants, animals, and other organisms.
For the consideration of plants and wildlife of the Nature Sanctuary, no pets are allowed.
Admission for individuals into Hawthorn Hollow is always free and open to the public during its hours of operation from March 1 through December 23.
